Charlie Hill was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1951. He earned a spot to perform at Hollywood's famous Comedy Store, in 1970s.

He finished from West De Pere High School in 1969 and went on to study speech and acting at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He was part of the Broom Street Theatre Group in Madison, WI.

In 1977, he was the first Native stand-up comedian ever to perform on national television, making his network debut on the Richard Pryor Show.
