Anna Pigeon takes a major turn in Season 1, Episode 6, “There’s Always a Road,” as Anna’s terrifying disappearance becomes more than a survival story. The episode picks up after Anna escapes the cave where she had been held captive, leaving the park rangers with a disturbing question: who was responsible for what happened to her, and why was someone so determined to make her disappear?
Anna’s account initially sounds almost impossible to prove. When she returns to the cave with Freddie and Zoey, the man she trapped is gone, along with the ladder she used to escape. Even Kay’s body is missing. But Anna refuses to dismiss the experience as a hallucination brought on by her concussion and dehydration. Her instincts tell her that someone deliberately targeted her.

The investigation eventually exposes a connection to Jeremiah Paulson, the powerful and ruthless figure who has increasingly emerged as one of Anna’s most dangerous adversaries. Anna discovers that the man involved in Kay’s murder was connected to Jeremiah, but the bigger shock comes when she realizes that she did not act alone.
Bethany Lopez, Manny’s wife and someone Anna considered a friend, was involved. The revelation works precisely because Bethany had previously appeared relatively harmless. Her quiet personality and seemingly caring nature made her an unlikely accomplice.
Yet small details suddenly take on a different meaning, particularly the food left for Anna while she was trapped. Anna realizes that the sandwiches were not simply an act of convenience, they point toward someone who knew how to make her feel cared for while secretly participating in her captivity.
But the episode saves its biggest twist for the final moments. Bethany asks Manny to contact her father. When Jeremiah answers or, more accurately, when the circumstances surrounding the call reveal the connection, it becomes clear that Jeremiah Paulson is Bethany’s father. The relationship is complicated, however. Bethany has Jeremiah saved as “Dad,” while his phone identifies her simply as “Bethany,” suggesting that whatever connection exists between them is far from affectionate or conventional.
The revelation immediately changes how Bethany’s actions can be interpreted. Her involvement was not simply about money or an ordinary alliance with Jeremiah. There appears to be a deeper desire for recognition from a father who has largely rejected her. That makes Bethany’s betrayal considerably more personal.
For Anna, the discovery also expands the conflict beyond a single case. Jeremiah is no longer just a powerful man interfering with the park, his influence reaches directly into the lives of people Anna trusted.
"There’s Always a Road” therefore functions as both the conclusion to Anna’s cave ordeal and a major setup for the season’s larger conflict. Bethany’s secret ties the seemingly separate stories together, while Jeremiah’s refusal to help his own daughter suggests that he may be willing to sacrifice anyone, including family to protect his interests.
